The Southernmost Point
Place.
The Southernmost Point is iconic.
Its buoy photographed millions of times since 1983.
An island must-see.
But this New Year's Day the world was dismayed that the beloved buoy was set ablaze.
By two vandals who set fire to the buoy with a Christmas tree. The audacity.
Adding to the history of this special place.
Because the ground beneath the Southernmost Point was once "Negro Beach."
Fond memories of swimming and splashing in the blue waters deep.
Then a marketplace for tourists visiting our Key.
A perfect picture of Southernmost hospitality.
And now home to the newly restored Southernmost Point buoy.
